The right type of chain

Not every type of chain is suitable for every car. Heavier vehicles such as SUVs and 4x4s require chains of heavier quality. Passenger-car snow chains cannot be used on the tyres of these vehicles.

Snow chain requirements – mandatory or wise?

In most winter sports countries such as Austria, France, Switzerland etc. it is mandatory to carry snow chains. Besides the risk of a fine or driving ban, it is of course most important to reach your winter sports destination safely and responsibly. Here you will find the different rules that apply in Europe. Always check that you have chains suitable for your tyre size and vehicle type.

Test fitting and practice

Fit the chains once before you leave. This prevents problems when you need to mount them in the snow and verifies the fit.

Front-fitted chains

More and more cars cannot use traditional snow chains due to limited space in the wheel arch. In this case, front-fitted chains are required. Well-known brands include Maggi Trak and Rud Centrax. These chains are common for wheels from 17 inches combined with brands such as Audi, Alfa Romeo, Volvo, VW, Opel, Peugeot and Renault. You will find this limitation in your car’s manual.

Tyre size

The tyre size is printed on the tyre. The format is width in mm / height in % of the width R radial or rim diameter in inches.

Winter, summer or all-season

A winter tyre can be recognised by the sipes in the tread. Winter tyres also have the Alpine symbol on the sidewall. See the image for more info.
